The bull's-eye is back on California sea lions that poach endangered salmon at Bonneville Dam on the Columbia River. A federal judge ruled that states, as a last resort, can begin killing as many as 85 sea lions annually for five years, removing animals that state wildlife officials say threaten billion-dollar efforts to save and restore salmon runs.

Scientists from more than 80 countries have two more years to examine and document the 95 percent of Earth's oceans that remain relatively unexplored. Their comprehensive report is due in 2010.
